West Virginians for Life (WVFL) is continuing its work to pass The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, lifesaving legislation that would protect West Virginia’s unborn babies who can feel pain from being aborted, by asserting a compelling state interest in their lives. Encouraging statements have been recently released from Senate President Jeff Kessler and Senate Majority Leader John Unger.
Substantial scientific research demonstrates that unborn babies can feel pain beginning by at least 20 weeks after conception. It is important that West Virginia has asserted its legitimate concern for the well-being of these innocent, pain-capable babies.
More than 80% of state legislators voted in support of the passage of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act during the regular session only to have Governor Tomblin veto the legislation in late March.
West Virginians for Life believes that a bill can be passed that addresses the Governor’s concerns.
According to John Carey, legislative coordinator for West Virginians for Life, “We would prefer that the Governor call a special session. For decades West Virginians for Life has had a good relationship with Governor Tomblin and we are convinced that an acceptable bill, one which we could all support, is possible. In the meantime, we are keeping our options open and will continue to collect signatures in support of a special session.”
Carey went on to say, “By five months after conception the unborn child is awakening to a new world. By this time she can taste the food her mother eats, she can actually hear her own mother’s voice, and yes, even feel pain. These little ones deserve to be protected, sooner than later.”
West Virginians for Life looks forward to an open dialog with the Governor to pass pain-capable legislation that he can sign.
