(Morgantown, WV – March 31, 2014) West Virginians for Life is disappointed in Governor Tomblin’s veto of HB 4588, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. In response, a Press Conference is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, in the lower rotunda of the Capitol.
Speaking will be West Virginians for Life Legislative Coordinator John Carey. He will be refuting the inaccurate portrayal of the bill in the Governor’s Veto statement.
Jennifer Popik, J.D., Legislative Counsel for National Right to Life, will address the constitutionality of the bill and respond to any legal questions from the press.
Speakers will also include Kristan Hawkins of Students for Life of America, Mallory Quigley of Susan B. Anthony List, Allen Whitt of the WV Family Policy Council, and Fr. Ryan Stichweh, Associate Rector of the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of the Diocese of Wheeling/Charleston.
There is a prayer vigil planned for later in the evening. Participants are asked to meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Capitol Parking Garage. The group will process from there to the Governor’s Mansion for a prayer vigil from 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. Those attending can show support for the babies threatened by a painful death from abortion by bringing packages of diapers to be donated to a local pregnancy care center in Charleston.
On Saturday, West Virginians for Life Legislative Coordinator John Carey had stated in response to the veto, “We expect a groundswell of support leading up to the 2015 session. Furthermore,” he said, “nothing the Governor has done has changed the fact that there is a substantial body of scientific evidence that unborn babies from 20 weeks and older feel pain.”
